Training for Greatness {197}

Dear Miss Dinah,

There are a few training techniques used by Olympic coaches that I find great.

One is Michael Phelps' coach. He explained that many times he put Michael in uncomfortable situations on purpose so that Michael would learn to rise to the occasion in less than perfect circumstances. One time, he picked Michael up late for a meet. Another time he orchestrated it so that he missed his meal before the meet. One meet he finagled his goggles into leaking, while another time he hid his goggles all together. Talk about frustration! But it's obvious that Michael can indeed perform under pressure.

The coaches for the Chinese gymnastics team makes the girls stand on the balance beam high up on their toes for about 5 minutes at the end of a practice session when they are completely fatigued. Under the Olympic lights, these girls look solid as a rock.

This morning I put your shoes on and off you went...then I noticed I put them on the wrong feet. It didn't slow you down :) This was not even intended to be a sneaky training technique for better walking.
